Modeling for FS One
FS One Model Viewer
To view your model like it will be seen in FS One, there are two
steps:
Click on any image to see a larger version.
Step 1: Run the ModelConverter
- With your graphics modeling program, export your model to
Wavefront .obj format with uncompressed .tga textures. This step
will produce the .obj and .mtl files with your .tga textures.
Note: The name of the graphics file should not include any
spaces.
Note: The .mtl file must include "map_Kd" references to
your textures, and the .obj must include the name of the .mtl
file. To check this step, open the files in any ASCII editor
(e.g. we like Notepad++).
Step 2: Run the ModelConverter
- Obtain from FS One, the ModelConverter app. Click to run and
navigate to your model folder. Select your .obj and .mtl files.
Click "Convert". Use the default settings (with one tweak below).

- For the 'specular' values, change the 0.9 to 1.0.
- The ModelConverter will create the FS One .boj model file and .mtr
material files that are used in the next step.
Step 3: Run the ModelViewer
- Obtain from FS One, the ModelViewer app.
- Copy the files (.boj and .mtr) to the ModelViewer/Graphics/Aircraft
folder. Make a new folder for your aircraft.
- Click on the ModelViewer app and click load. Go to the
Graphics/Aircraft/[your aircraft folder] and click on the .boj to
view. Click on "Help" for more info.
- The Firebird example will look like this in the ModelViewer:
Step 4: Review by FS One
- For us to review your model during development, we will need these
model files: .obj, .mtl, .boj, .mtr, and all uncompressed .tga
files.
